They are the same thing-different name.

Cold sores are caused by the herpes virus and are usually on the outside. Canker sores are typically found inside your mouth.

They are not the same thing. Canker sores occur on the inside of your mouth/lips/cheeks. Cold sores occur on the outside, and almost always on/around the lips.

Canker sores are a type of ulcer, and they are generally caused by abrasions, lacerations or other types of irritants (like very acidic drinks) or injury (like biting your cheek or lip).

Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus and are highly contagious when they are in the “blister” stage. Most people have been exposed to this virus at some point in their lives, but only a relatively small percentage get repeat outbreaks of cold sores.
