Q&A: Puppy with a “cold sore”….?

Puppy with a “cold sore”….?
Jack is a black 9 month old Golden Retriever mix. Today, I noticed that he has a small, raised bump on his outer upper lip, just below the whiskers. There isn’t any hair on it. It’s quite small and relatively flat, and he doesn’t protest whatsoever to my touching it.
What is this? Is a vet visit something to do ASAP, or if it doesn’t go away in a week or so? Ever seen something like it?

It could be a viral wart or a sebaceous cyst. Watch it for any change in color, texture or size, or if it becomes inflamed or seeping. Point it out to the vet at his annual wellness check.

I wouldn’t worry just yet. It could be something as innocent as an mosquito bite or a pimple (yes, dogs can get them).
Keep a very close eye on it for any change. If it gets bigger at all, seems to bother him, changes color, feels hot, leaks, if more appear, etc…, then give your vet a call and make an appointment to have it checked out. I don’t think you need to rush your dog to the vet over a tiny bump, especially since, for all you know, it has been around for only a day or so. You wouldn’t rush yourself into your doctor for something like this, would you? You would likely keep an eye on it and only get yourself checked if there was some change, or if it didn’t seem to be going away. That’s generally my rule of thumb if I suspect something could be wrong with one of my dogs. “Would I take myself to the doctor for something like this?” If the answer is “yes,” then an appointment with the vet is made immediately.
Dog’s can’t get cold sores for starters. That’s a human virus that isn’t transmissable to dogs.
It could be a cyst to a red cell tumor to a dog wart. The only way you can really know what it is, is to ask your vet. NO ONE on YADOGS can advise you on something as serious as bumps and lumps on dogs with any accuracy. I have experienced a lot of things in my lifetime with dogs and wouldn’t even begin to tell you that all is ok.
Yes as for experience my dog had a lump on her leg, started out the size of a match head, grew over a month waiting for a vet visit. The operation to remove it was quite dramatic. Turned out to be a benign tumor, luckily. Glad it was on her leg though, can still see the great big lump that was removed by scar tissue and missing leg. Glad I didn’t wait for more than a month.
My dog has had some a couple of years ago. And I’ve noticed them clearly. What you should do is……… take your dog to the vet and if they say anything like “this dog needs sugery” (which I’ve heard that quote alot)no need to freak out. Ok???? So if the dog needs sugery it needs sugery RIGHT away. But don’t worry, your dog will be fine. The vet knows what they are doing. They are VERY VERY VERY gentle with dogs. PROMISE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Because I am a dog professional!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And seriously I am basically a dog professional!!!!!!
